How to Find a Clothing Manufacturer on Alibaba (Without Getting Burned)

To find a reliable clothing manufacturer on Alibaba, filter by specialism, confirm you're talking to a real factory (not a trading company), order a paid sample against a tech pack, and pay through Alibaba's protected checkout. Badges like "Verified" or "Gold Supplier" help, but none of them prove a company actually owns sewing lines.
Is Alibaba safe for clothing brands?
Alibaba is a marketplace, not a manufacturer. It lists real factories alongside trading companies (middlemen) that resell factory capacity. Both can work, but trading companies add margin and a layer of miscommunication. Renaud Anjoran, an ASQ Certified Quality Engineer and CEO of The Sofeast Group, warns that the "Verified" label only confirms a supplier exists and holds a business licence, and that Gold Supplier status reflects paid membership, not manufacturing capability.
Factory vs trading company: how to tell
| Signal | Likely factory | Likely trading company |
|---|---|---|
| Product range | Narrow: e.g. only jersey and fleece | Everything: tees, shoes, phone cases |
| Photos | Own production lines, cutting tables, staff | Stock or catalogue photos only |
| Answers on fabric/GSM | Specific and technical | Vague, or "we can do anything" |
| Video call | Happy to walk the floor | Avoids or only shows an office |
| Business licence scope | Lists garment manufacturing | Lists trading / import-export |
The 7 checks before you pay a clothing factory
- Specialism. Pick a factory that already makes your product type. A heavyweight hoodie needs a fleece specialist, not a dress maker.
- In-house vs outsourced. Ask which processes (knitting, dyeing, printing, embroidery) are done in-house.
- Trading company check. Use the table above.
- Photo reviews. Read reviews with buyer photos, not star ratings alone.
- Fabric knowledge. Ask for composition, GSM and fabric swatches before sampling.
- Price sanity. If a quote is far below others for the same spec, the spec is being cut somewhere.
- Communication. Slow, vague replies during sampling get worse during bulk.
Which country should you manufacture clothing in?
| Country | Known for | Typical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| China | Huge range, fast sampling, strong jersey and fleece | Need to filter out trading companies |
| Pakistan | Heavyweight cotton, fleece, sportswear at low cost | Longer shipping to US |
| Turkey | Premium cotton, quick shipping into UK/EU | Higher unit price than Asia |
| Portugal | Premium quality, small-batch friendly | Highest unit cost of the five |
| India | Cotton jersey, embroidery, handwork | Quality varies widely by factory |
Import duty depends on your product's commodity code and its country of origin. Check the official UK Trade Tariff (or your own country's tariff) before costing a product, and remember UK imports also carry 20% VAT.
How to pay safely
Use Alibaba Trade Assurance. According to WorldFirst, buyers covered by it must pay through Alibaba's payment gateway and report problems within 30 days of receipt. Anjoran points out it is "far from being insurance". It's a dispute process, so a clear tech pack is your real protection: it defines what "correct" means.
First message to send a supplier
Keep it short and specific so factories take you seriously:
Hi, I run a streetwear brand and I'm sampling a 100% cotton, [GSM] boxy t-shirt with a [print method] print. Attached is my tech pack. Please confirm: 1) MOQ per colour, 2) sample cost and lead time, 3) bulk unit price at [quantity], 4) whether knitting, dyeing and printing are in-house. Thanks.
FAQ
What is a good MOQ for a new clothing brand?
Overseas factories often ask for 300–1,000 units per style, while startup-friendly factories accept far less. See our MOQ guide.
Should I order a sample before bulk?
Always. Approve a physical sample against your tech pack, then make bulk match that "golden sample".
Is there a shortcut to finding good factories?
Yes: start from factories other brands already use. The Ultimate Supplier List covers 114 vetted manufacturers across China, Pakistan, Portugal, Turkey, the UK and more, with MOQs, contacts, price tiers and past brands. For the full step-by-step process, get the Alibaba Supplier Guide (£5), which includes a supplier scorecard and a first-message template.
